Dear Sheri E. Smith, ShelterCare is calling on esteemed local and regional artists for the 9th annual Art Gives Hope Event. The event raises money to support Lane County community members who are experiencing homelessness or on the verge of homelessness. Last year, ShelterCare helped over 1,500 people find stable housing, support services, and behavioral health services. You can make a difference by donating a piece of your art to be auctioned and sold to support ShelterCare services. The Art Gives Hope event will take place at Venue 252 in Eugene, OR on April 25th. Last year the event raised over $33k and had 275 attendees. This year our goal is to raise $50k and have over 300 attendees. Your generous and prestigious contributions will help ShelterCare meet this goal and have a significant positive impact on the community. Art submissions can be submitted here: Art is selected by a panel of judges. Due to the high number of submissions and limited space not all can be accepted. Selected artists will receive two free admissions to the event, artist promotion on ShelterCare’s website and social media, be included in the event program, and have the option to receive 10% of the sales price. The deadline for art submissions are March 10th, 11:59:00 PM. Sincerely, Paul Herman

Dear Ms. Smith, The Willamette Heritage Center gave me your email, saying that you have been a terrific pine needle basket instructor for them in the past. I have a friend who has wanted for year to learn how to create pine needle baskets, and I would like to give her this for Christmas. Would you be interested in coming up to Salem sometime in January or February to teach a small group of women how to do this? If so, how much would you charge to do this? Right now there are three of us interested in learning, but if you prefer more, we can make that happen. Thank you so much for your time, Kristina Sugrue

Hi Sheri, I have taken a couple of classes from you. Loved them. One at Eugene Textile and one at your home. I went back to Louisiana last week to fly fish...but while I was back there I took time to look for longleaf pine needles. I was looking in parks to collect myself but only found loblolly pines. I contacted a local landscaper that had long leaf mulch. He had a rolled bale and not crushed into a square. They were in pretty good shape. Shipping was over $100.00 so I brought most of it back as extra luggage on the plane. ANYWAY... I was looking online to see how much longleaf needed cost to purchase for basket making. I would just like to recover my costs ($50.00) and sell what I will not use. Interested? I have cleaned, sorted and bundled into 1lb bundles. Needles are 12-15 inches in length. I can send a photo if you would like to purchase. I will be glad to "make a deal" to the one who has taught me this craft:) I will be glad to meet so you can see for yourself if the needles are the quality you want and/or if you could use. No pressure if you do not need. Just thought of you first before I put on Etsy. Warm regards Jane

Hi Sheri, Loved taking your 2 classes here in Morro Bay at Susan bead shop last time you were here. Made a pendant and wonderful small bowl. I'd love to make some pendants/Christmas ornaments but having a hard time finding thin 1-2" metal rings like the ones you used. Can you tell where I could find them or could I buy them from you? Thought I may have to go to making them from wire. Have a copy of Pine Needle, Raffia Basketry by Jeannie McFarland and want to try weaving spokes for the center. Hope to see you next time you're in Morro Bay!! Blessings! Joanne (Coalesce Bookstore, Morro Bay worker bee!)

Hi Sheri, I don't know how I came to find your beautiful pine needle pendants, but I so want to learn. I'm a member of the Oneida Tribe of WI and have been a weaver of black ash baskets for a few years. This has been in my family for generations. However, recently--I've gotten interested in Pine needles and, have even begun experimenting with them. My best friend Gayla is in last stage colon cancer and, has expressed an interest in trying. She's weak and cannot travel of course. So, I was going to just go over to her house with my other friend Nancy and try to hold a mini craft circle just the 3 of us. Do you have any patterns to sell Sheri? Or, tutorials on YouTube that we could view? Any suggestions? We adore your beautiful work!! Wow! Thank you in advance Sheri. Warmly, Debra

Hi, Sheri ~ Been lots of years since we have been in McKenzie Bridge. I've thought about your lovely pieces for years and just got a basket full of our local pine needles and going to give it a try. We shall see what happens. I see that you teach at Harlequin. I've been in there! Several years I have gone to Glass Stock ~ 4 days of torchwork, etc. Unfortunately, we will not be going this year.... bummer.... Instead going to Albuquerque. I'm thinking about making small jewelry type pieces that incorporate my Lampwork beads. I see several pieces that you have done that as well. Did you ever use the ones that I sent? Still doing several shows a year and in several gallery's ~ keeps a gal busy! I just 'friended' you on Facebook so I can follow your wonderful art. Hope all is well in your little corner of the world. Leslie

Am going to try by the end of next week to contact the surgeon and ask if there will be enough time between surgery-workshop to recover enough to participate and enjoy the latter. Don't know how sign-ups are going, but would appreciate giving me this next week to find out whether I will be a Zombie Weaver that Saturday! SO want to take this class; your input on what physical shape I would need to be in to be successful as possible in learning would be an immense help! Thanx, ellen babin
